European public cloud support for openstack

elastx is a Swedish public cloud provider. We provide two public cloud platforms provided by jelastic, a platform as a service (PAAS) and an infrastructure as a service (IAAs) supported by openstack. We should find the fundamental path to solve the supply side problems. Elastx helps customers make full use of the advantages of the cloud by automating the whole process from code to production, and provides 24*7 customer environment monitoring

enter: Mariano cunietti, chief technology officer, is an Italian cloud service provider. We first provided public cloud to a region of Italy in 2013, and in 2014, we opened Frankfurt and Amsterdam. We are the first company in Europe to run multi region openstack public cloud. At the end of 2015, we were awarded a contract for public cloud services by the EU, making us an official provider of EU institutions

internap:stephane Antoine, senior manager of cloud and platform engineering and operations; Bruno morel, director of software development

in 2011, internap launched the first public cloud based on openstack. Since then, it has gradually matured to support bare metal through ironic and multi regional capabilities (North America, Asia Pacific and Europe, the Middle East and Africa). Internap's public cloud provides core openstack services for each customer. We offer the most deployment possibilities to simplify portability and private deployment with other providers

what makes your organization decide to enter the public cloud business

cunietti: in 2009, we decided to provide customers with alternatives to VMware. We hope to find an all open source service. We started using two virtual private server platforms, and then we took a huge leap, trying to create a substitute for Amazon in Italy and Europe. We also provide hosting services. Unlike large service providers, our services are not only large in capacity, low in price, but also professional and high-quality

morel:internap has been trying to provide customers with one-stop infrastructure services. From IP connection to bare metal hosting, our products are characterized by integrity and performance. After virtualization became mainstream and widely adopted, we saw the rapid adoption of cloud technology. When we deeply understand the challenges of customers, we realize that the implementation of public cloud will best serve them. Therefore, we began to build a mutually beneficial solution: a public cloud that is flexible in resource usage and pricing models, with high-performance and standard APIs

when building public cloud products, what makes you choose openstack

morel: in 2010, when we established the first bare metal product similar to the cloud, we had very limited options when choosing the technology stack. Openstack is still being built by Rackspace and NASA, and most customers ask us: JSON? Who is Jason? But by 2012, openstack has matured, and we are faced with two options to compete with foreign experimental machines: first, continue to be troubled by all the struggles, while maintaining self-made, closed, complex and internal solutions. The second is to accept openstack's strong and dynamic community, open source and community first philosophy, as well as its common sense and strategy tested technology. Our choice is very clear: openstack

cunietti: when we choose, few open source products can replace VMware and vcloud director. There is no flexibility in terms of products and pricing mechanism. We are worried that it will eventually be bound by some price agreements. At that time, openstack was in the initial stage (cactus release), but the design was very interesting and the community actively participated. We firmly believe that collaboration and open source software will do better, so we usually choose openstack as our bet. Now it seems that we have won

your cloud has an openstack powered badge. What does this mean for customers

antoine: the openstack powered badge provides some and potential customers of our packaging materials with proof of our commitment to the openstack community and technology. It reaffirms our commitment to provide rich experience, because we not only have all three badges (platform, computing and object storage), but also can provide IAAs services through standardized APIs and portals. This also promotes the portability of services based on internap openstack and simplifies management. Considering that we have a limited resource pool and all the advantages of the openstack community, we can make better progress in developing and publishing a wide range of functions, while maintaining a high level of code quality

The openstack community is known for its agility and creative problem solving. What was unexpected and what challenges did your team overcome

grankvist: Yes, we can't agree more! An unexpected challenge is that when we implement glusterfs, the results are all wrong. We have to move as quickly and painlessly as possible. The openstack community responds much faster than the paid support subscription model, and has impressive technical knowledge

antoine: the success of our bare metal servers and the adoption of existing servers have revealed the Nova scheduling problem with more and more IC nodes. We discussed these projects with various contributors to the Nova project, and they quickly helped. They reviewed our solutions and provided valuable feedback to help us bring the system back online in a more stable way. Finally, at the last mid cyle OPS meetup, our engineers contacted a wider range of Nova users and discussed our challenges in depth. We found that these challenges would damage the machine and hurt users, which is common to all. Therefore, we can now multiply the expansion by gradually eliminating Nova tasks that ironic doesn't care about, and we have seen great improvements in the performance and expansion of the bare metal management infrastructure

what is your prediction for the future of openstack public cloud

grankvist: This is an interesting topic, but in a word, we believe that the vast majority of companies are still running traditional infrastructure and are considering moving to a public cloud platform. Openstack positioning is accurate, and the container ecosystem is maturing, making it less painful to start using public clouds (such as openstack)

cunietti: alliance is the key. Especially in Europe, we are looking forward to the rise of a supplier network. This is a cultural problem. We are used to it. We are already working hard

antoine: at present, containers in openstack are mainly concentrated on the management plane. However, we believe that in order to promote widespread adoption, openstack needs to better solve the problems in the whole life cycle of modern applications, from container image registration to automatic extensibility. At present, many competitive technologies and suppliers complicate the company's decision-making process. We see community participation in the open container Initiative (OCI) and other container focused projects as a key component of a successful adoption strategy. Once adopted, we believe that openstack will become an obvious good choice for today's demand for services, including IOT, big data and serverless infrastructure. It will provide a coherent platform, from a simple private cloud control plane to a public cloud nfv ecosystem that can seamlessly manage containers, virtual and bare metal instances
